Chakalaka Recipe
What’s better than our #BaysideButchery boerewors? Having it on Braai Day with a side of chakalaka. Here’s our recipe 😉
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive oil)
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1-2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-2 chilli peppers, finely chopped (optional, for heat)
- 1-2 bell peppers (red or green), chopped
- 2 large carrots, grated
- 1 can chopped tomatoes or fresh tomatoes
- 1 tbsp curry powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp ground cumin (optional)
- 1 can baked beans in tomato sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 3-5 minutes. Add garlic, chilli peppers (if using), and bell peppers, and cook for another 3-5 minutes.
- Stir in the curry powder, paprika, and cumin (if using). Add the grated carrots and cook for a few minutes until slightly softened.
- Pour in the chopped tomatoes and cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the mixture to reduce slightly and the flavours to meld together.
- Stir in the baked beans, reduce the heat, and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- If the chakalaka is too thick, add a little water to reach the desired consistency. Some like it thicker, while others prefer a bit more saucy. See less
