Chakalaka Recipe

Chakalaka Recipe

What’s better than our #BaysideButchery boerewors? Having it on Braai Day with a side of chakalaka. Here’s our recipe 😉

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive oil)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1-2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-2 chilli peppers, finely chopped (optional, for heat)
  • 1-2 bell peppers (red or green), chopped
  • 2 large carrots, grated
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes or fresh tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin (optional)
  • 1 can baked beans in tomato sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 3-5 minutes. Add garlic, chilli peppers (if using), and bell peppers, and cook for another 3-5 minutes.
  2. Stir in the curry powder, paprika, and cumin (if using). Add the grated carrots and cook for a few minutes until slightly softened.
  3. Pour in the chopped tomatoes and cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the mixture to reduce slightly and the flavours to meld together.
  4. Stir in the baked beans, reduce the heat, and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. If the chakalaka is too thick, add a little water to reach the desired consistency. Some like it thicker, while others prefer a bit more saucy. See less
